Microeconomic Policy in the News: A Case Study of Hurricane Juan
This 4-page undergraduate paper analyses two newspaper articles: a London Press article N.S. Allots $10m in Hurricane Aid and a Globe and Mail article, Halifax Mayor says N.S. is Being Kept in the Dark. The paper considers the treatment of microeconomic policy in both articles, and concludes that Hurricane Juan, a natural disaster affecting Maritime Canada in September 2003 can be examined to provide insight into microeconomic policy. The essay further examines microeconomic issues such as resource allocation and normative and positive issues. Hurricane Juan, and its economics, are described in both positive and normative language in the newspaper articles described. Further, this paper considers the ways that resource allocation is central during disaster relief. In the concluding paragraph, this paper examines the likely effects of the policies involved in disaster relief. The paper suggests that the policies themselves will be changed due to criticism and that some will deal with the disaster through private means rather than through government intervention.
